what is happening outside

cut this out and put it in a pocket. none of it needs an app, a car, or anywhere in particular. most of it is happening on the way to the shop.

ripening

  • blackberries, sweetest after a warm week
  • rowan berries going properly red
  • elderberries hanging heavy and dark
  • conkers, still green and still up there
  • apples in gardens nobody is picking

leaving

  • swallows and martins lining up on wires
  • the last swifts, screaming, then gone
  • butterflies at anything still flowering
  • wasps getting bolder and slower

listen for

  • grasshoppers in long dry grass
  • a robin starting up again after a quiet summer
  • the first proper wind in dry leaves
  • nothing at all, at about four in the morning

the light

  • coming in sideways by seven
  • mist sitting in the low fields at dawn
  • webs turning up overnight, everywhere at once
  • the sun setting somewhere it did not last month
written for the northern hemisphere, roughly august into september. some of it will be a fortnight early where you are, or a fortnight late. that is the good bit.
